GREENSBORO, NC – February 18, 2010 – The Junior League of Greensboro has partnered with the ACC Women’s Tournament to fight childhood obesity. Through the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen program, we are committed to improving the health of today’s youth by empowering them to make choices that lead to healthy lifestyles. Kids in the Kitchen addresses a growing problem facing today's children with the number of overweight children having increased dramatically, substantially increasing children's risks for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Educating both children and their families is the key to reversing the trend toward increased levels of childhood obesity.

The Junior League of Greensboro has printed educational booklets that will be given to elementary and middle school aged children attending the evening games of the ACC Women’s Tournament on Friday, March 5. The booklets contain healthy lifestyle tips from all twelve ACC Women’s Basketball Head Coaches. They will also contain healthy recipes that are easy for kids to make and educational information for both the parents and children.

Members of the Junior League of Greensboro will also be staffing educational nutrition stations set up on the concourse of the coliseum. The stations will educate the children and parents about Portion Distortion addressing the correct portion sizes; Rethink Your Drink addressing the amount of sugar in some popular beverages; Wheels for Wellness teaching participants to make healthy snack choices; and finally an exercise station. Children who visit all four stations and receive a stamp at each station will be entered in a drawing for Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park family four packs for the 2010 season.

This impactful community outreach would not be possible without our Championship Sponsors: Scott Cashion Pediatric Dentistry, Greensboro Pediatricians, Inc., Alan Irvin Orthodontics, Playworld Carolinas, Graphic Visual Solutions and Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park.

The Junior League also has special ticket packages available. For $20.00 an individual may purchase two tickets for the Friday evening games (6:00 and 8:00). For each package purchased, a third ticket will be given to a deserving child from one of our community partner organizations. For the 2009-2010 year, the Junior League of Greensboro has committed funding and volunteers to the following community partners: ArtQuest, Family Support Network, Food Assistance, Freedom House, Horsepower, LifeSpan, Senior Resources of Guilford, Teacher Supply Warehouse and an Autism Research Project. In addition, the Junior League of Greensboro also continues to support the community through The Bargain Box (our thrift store), our Teacher’s Grants Program, our partnership with the Women’s Resource Center, and our Nursery Supply Store benefitting the participants of Guilford County’s ‘Baby Love Program’. Ticket packages may be purchased by visiting our website at www.jlgreensboro.org and clicking on the Make a Difference tab to access the eStore.

The Junior League of Greensboro has contributed over $3 million to the community in its 83-year history, with more than $2 million contributed in the last 10 years. This year over 280 Junior League volunteers will help to meet our community’s needs by serving in excess of 12,000 volunteer hours. The Junior League of Greensboro is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The purpose of the Junior League is exclusively educational and charitable.
